i've heard from commsies who have gone sub that they didn't get to use reddit either. they would absolutely hog all the bandwidth available at satcom enabled depth (apparently they had a buoy or something and didnt need to go as high as periscope) but even they would have to get the hockey scores and dear john letters via official message over HF once in a while, and all the satcom gear was broken or at least misconfigured 90% of the time anyway and the true pro gamer move was simply owning a laptop and downloading tons of shit every port visit
I hate the navy too but I can't say that my boss's stories don't make me sometimes think "ah, I could do that for a year or two for an extra shot of cash and a couple of more fun stories than I had on the minesweepers."
