It's been said before but basically a lot of the Space Race is fake. Not like the moon landing was fake but the entire narrative around it, including NASA as the main player in the US space program, was. NASA was made to be the public body of the United States Airforce who were already making satelites and actual EVA suits for counter espionage on Soviet intelligence satellites (not my words, the Mercury mission programs crews own testimony). Almost all of the satellites developed and deployed by NASA was designed by the NROs own RnD devision, they also perfomed the bulk of atmospheric launches throughout the era of the Space Race to form spy satellite constellation networks. Also while it was never confirmed, the Airforce was likely already conducting test launches before 1950 with the Roswell incident which, in all of its details collected around it, heavily indicates it was an animal test flight with either monkeys or two small apes to measure the physical effects on pilots in high earth atmosphere.
The NRO is still opperation today and are responsible for the SENTIENT Program. Basically AI satellites that mass harvest infomation or reports from intelligence assets on the ground to predict outcomes or probable results on just about anything. This could either be something as mundane as naval fleet movements or the daily routine of a high priority target or even the logistical outcome of a state actor in so many years. The program is straight up dystopian Sci-Fi. But you won't hear many people bring up these programs because the NRO also specialize in disinfomation and work in tandem with the United States Airforce to neutralize credible actors. They did this throughout the 70s and 80s with the formation of UFO lore and are now doing it today with the flar earth movement. They have reused NASA as a public arm but instead of positive publicity they now use NASA as a dummy for conspiracy theorists to rant and rave at.
