It's been said before but basically a lot of the Space Race is fake. Not like the moon landing was fake but the entire narrative around it, including NASA as the main player in the US space program, was. Basically AI satellites that mass harvest infomation or reports from intelligence assets on the ground to predict outcomes or probable results on just about anything. The program is straight up dystopian Sci-Fi.
