My biggest pet peeves is shotas with female hairstyles, female features like exaggerated thick thighs or wide hips, awful feminine facial expressions, basically any type of exaggerated femininity in a shota. Shotas like Naota are superior in every way.

I am not sure that the series is as quintessential in Japan as it is internationally. Remember, it was Adult Swim that pushed for all those (presumably unwatchable) sequels/spin-offs.
