Mac post OSX was built on the idea that everything has to be fast. You have to be able to open a program the microsecond you click on its icon or need to open something because normalfaggots think that if this doesn't happen, the computer is "Slow".

So Apple realized the solution is to just keep commonly used programs in the background for a while, and when the user inevitably wants to use it again, it's already there and ready to be used again. Which worked great because the idea that Macs are faster than PCs has persisted to this day despite the fact Windows has done the same thing since 8.
