I don't use shotguns, but i think the onslaught/reverse onslaught allows you to dip into a few small gun variety. shotguns also count in small guns IIRC.

That, goat legs and packing light are all great options.
Goat legs makes fall damage outside of PA nonexistant and no animation when hitting the ground.

Scaling perks that give free regen or exp aren't the best but they serve a purpose for others.
