Not my story but dad (abrams tank driver in NG) mentioned one time his tank platoon was asked by some riflemen to help support them take an enemy position in a thick wooded area.

The area was too densw for the tanks so the entire tank platoon dismount, unbolted 240's from the tanks, and walked into the woods as a makeshift machinegun section
