I think they realized instead of trying to contain the lies or convince people they're not lies, they're just embracing it and so everyone will just automatically assume everything is a lie. Takes the burden off them to make it believable or convince people something is legit when people just say everything is fake by default.
Sort of like AI; getting deepfakes to a point where they are indecipherable from real video or photos is nearly here. Once that happens, people won't believe anything to be real, even if you literally show them a video recording of Hillary Clinton cutting some virgin's throat and bathing in the blood. They'll say it's AI, or the Clintons will claim it's AI meant to smear them.
People will just be left with the choice to doubt everything - and still have to live day to day - or to believe some arbiter of truth and rely on them to declare what is right and true vs. fake. Sort of like how the Church used to have absolute authority on matters of religion, and it was unquestionable.
