Ever since console devs/manufacturers obfuscated NPD sales data making console numbers useless, it wasn't long before the developers would came after Steam data, which isn't even direct sales numbers, but adjacent metrics. So they're butthurt over even those numbers which can indicate poor performance. They want a world where they can paint a fake narrattive or at least have nothing the opposition can use as ammunition so they can hand-wave away all poor sales talk as inconclusive.
