I've always skipped every Naughty Dog game on steam sales when there's a mark off. It used to be that games would either have mass appeal, moderate appeal, or be niche. This is a sustainable way to make games because if you are only developing for some of the planet, you know generally what they like/respond to (usually the devs themselves fall into the demographic they're aiming for) so development is shorter and contained. You are also very likely to make your money back, and more. In other words, you're completely focused and remain profitable.

Now, it's no longer enough for games to have mass appeal. What publishers want is games that appeal to the entire planet. They see the success of titles like Minecraft and Fortnite and want that success for every single game their studios make. This means, for a start, every game has to be infantile and socially/mechanically safe, even the ones that are "18+". It also happens that there's been a big push for political activism in the past ten years and appealing to these groups is seen, in the eyes of executives, as a good way to have broader appeal. It's not coincidence that we have stuff like rapper collaborations with the new Call of Duty games after the success of games like Fortnite, which pioneered real life celebrities from minority groups having crossovers in the mainstream.
However, this isn't sustainable, because (shocker) it turns out that people only want one "big" game in their life (Minecraft, Fortnite), and more than that, we don't like being pandered to.
So it amounts to years of development wasted on meetings like this and a huge amount of lost money when the game invariably flops.
