He wasn't even comparing the gameplay and never pretended to. He was comparing both game's presentation directly without any leading commentary telling people what to think and so when left to make up their own mind on the obvious conclusion they lashed out at him because they had too much emotional energy invested in the remake. He directly compared scenes, audio and locations side by side and gave them absolutely no room to intellectually weasel their way out of an honest assessment which is what I think made people the most mad, and when you DO compare them like that it becomes clear that the original game had much better atmosphere and attention to detail and wasn't filed down to a nub of any le problematic content.

He made the mistake of actually having a reasoned opinion instead of going after low hanging fruit like most people expected from him
