If you compare them directly without any nuance, RE4R is better. It's not rocket science to improve a known formula compared to making it from scratch.
The problem is that RE4 was revolutionary and basically as good as the technology at the time allowed it to be.
RE4R is great but it could be better and the definitive RE experience if they tried harder and made some better design choices. We got a 9/10 that could've been a 10/10. There shouldn't be even a single aspect of RE4R that is worse than RE4 even if overall the Remake is better. There is no excuse to cut corners when you're not making things from scratch.

Texture work is much in RE4R. It's very sloppy, sometimes it doesn't make sense (like dirt decals overlapping on objects in nonsensical ways). RE4's textures are perfect, every asset is a masterpiece

One thing I can never fucking understand is why do almost all remakes and remasters make everything overly bright and decrease the contrast. Dark Souls Remastered is one of the biggest offenders in this regard.
Resident Evil 4 is the ONE remake where it's the opposite and they increase the contrast in the game compared to the original which was washed out. I rarely see this brought up in RE4 threads and even if you like the original more I think that's one thing the Remake should be unanimously praised for. The colour grading is way better, especially in HDR.

I enjoyed re4 remake when it came out but I haven't wanted to return to it at all since then. The floaty and imprecise movement and the bullet sponge enemies just feel so unsatisfying compared to the og. Also I hate the new focus on crouchwalk stealth, that's not what re4 is.
Remake has its good points but nothing will replace the original for me. I wish they had just spent that dev time on a whole new game instead of remaking something that was already a 10/10.

I've seen comparison videos. It seems 50/50. When I judge in favor of the original, I base it purely on modern remakes taking it upon themselves to "fix" things that aren't "broke". If a game did well enough in the first place to warrant getting a remake, the controls, physics and camera shouldn't need to be changed, unless it was something like the sonic adventure ports, for example. That shit on the gc was a horrible "upgrade"

I liked both but the original is better. I feel the same way about all the Resident Evil remakes though including RE1 Remake. I think the original versions of RE1,2,3 and 4 are all better than their remakes. I still enjoyed all the remakes.

What is it with modern developers and putting gigantic rocky cliffs all over their fucking maps? Every single video game skyline/horizon these days it cut off by some National Park-level cliff formation, 10 feet outside the play area in every direction. Like, look at the lake in both games in 1:35 of that video...

Except you really don’t. The enemies are much more aggressive and have better AI after twenty years. Professional mode makes the original look like easy mode, which it was because of how easy it is to trivialize everything with melee.

I'm playing the RE4R right now and having a lot of fun with it, I think the only shitty thing about it is the VA audio. Leon is alright, Ashley is alright, new Merchant is pretty good but everyone else sounds awful. Ada sounds really fat for some reason.

I thought RE4R is okay for a single playthrough, the original is still better paced, is more satisfying to play and has more atmospheric and memorable moments throughout the campaign (that inculdes levels, encounters and character interaction). RE4R has some shitty moments like an infinite smaller enemy spawn during the encounters with stronger foes (that even includes the final boss fight) and aiming that is rng with its narrowing reticle and shooting that is dependant on camera position, not the gun model's.
I recently discovered that RE4 is inifnitely better than the remake in terms of sound design. If you use a half decent audio setup and try play both games you'll see the difference straight away. The music being better is a subjective thing but how the original's sounds, ambience and mixing mog the fuck out of the remake is an objective truth.

He wasn't even comparing the gameplay and never pretended to. He was comparing both game's presentation directly without any leading commentary telling people what to think and so when left to make up their own mind on the obvious conclusion they lashed out at him because they had too much emotional energy invested in the remake. He directly compared scenes, audio and locations side by side and gave them absolutely no room to intellectually weasel their way out of an honest assessment which is what I think made people the most mad, and when you DO compare them like that it becomes clear that the original game had much better atmosphere and attention to detail and wasn't filed down to a nub of any le problematic content.

He made the mistake of actually having a reasoned opinion instead of going after low hanging fruit like most people expected from him
