I actually agree, feel free to call me retarded again, but he did the best he could with what little intel he had, and had to balance prior Terran knowledge with the realities of distant space travel and almost constant first contacts. Sure, compared to any other captain he could be considered terrible, but it only makes sense as the first stumblings into a new era.
