If you want to get into the weeds of it, humans want control because it's something we didn't have in abundance for a very long time.
You lived in a cave or comparable and how much you ate and slept was at the mercy of weather and wild life. This made humans fight more and more to get control over the chaos of life but in the last 300 years everything has gone too fast and now humans have so much control over their life it has become detrimental.
You didn't need to enforce boundaries 400 years ago, nature did it for you, that woman couldn't get an apartment with central air and netflix with her filler job that contributes nothing to the community, have security or the police to call up if something went south, she didn't have the pill to ensure no child was made with a man she was unsure of. What she had was a chaotic world where she was born the weaker sex and would need either family or someone outside her family to help protect and give some provisions as well, so men and women for millions of years had to "settle" due to what the world brought with it.
Now however, we have tamed the world to a point that it looks far safer than what it actually is so men and women have to figure everything out without the pressure of nature crashing on them every day.
