A very good question I have often wondered myself. European nations still, smartly, wanted their weapons manufacturing to be domestic. So why didn't they have Colt come out and partner with a domestic company to set up in-nation factories the way Canada did with Diemaco? The Canadian C7 rifle is a hell of a lot better than the SA80 and FAMAS shit the Europeans were coming up with. Better than the German G36 for that matter.

Then the Germans slap a totally unnecessary external piston on the AR-15 and now suddenly these European countries are ready to adopt it. Colt experimented with external pistons in the 60's and showed they're pointless extra weight and increases recoil.Eugene Stoner's invention of putting the piston chamber within the bolt carrier group was genius. The only positive of the external short stroke or long stroke piston is helping to keep gas out of your face when shooting suppressed. That's not something that needs to be considered when selecting a general infantry rifle.
