Thing is, if the next Smash game has less characters they need to make it worth it, either with a lot of new characters replacing the missing ones or with a big change that makes it worth because you can play Ultimate on the Switch 2. They did that with Mario Kart World, the game is very different from 8 because otherwise it would be 8 with less stuff, but the game has costumes, new mechanics and an open world to make it very different.
They also could make a "Switch 2 version" of Ultimate and keep making characters, I would buy that, but I don't know if they could legally do it.
