Incidentally, I was reading Fatheringham's biography of Merckx I posted a couple of days ago. In the part of book where he talks about Savona, he frames it as a moment of Merckx losing his innocence, him no longer cycling out of joy of cycling. Parallel to Pogacar in the last week of this year's Tour occured to me.
