Franklin DELANO Roosevelt wanted to get involved in World War II so badly, especially against the Japanese, because the Empire of Japan was muscling the Jews-British-Americans out of the Chinese opium market. This was obviously intolerable to him.

The Imperial Japanese for their part were given orders known as the "Three Alls"; Kill All, Burn All, Loot All.

As part of the looting, when the Japanese conquered a territory, after stealing all of the moveable valuables, they would distribute and then sell tobacco cigarettes containing opium, in an effort to coax locals to resume their addiction but pay for Japanese opium in an effort to ferret out some of the hidden hard currency that remained.

Thus, the Chinese came to see opium and opium addiction as a deliberate foreign plot to destroy their country (because it was), and the Communist Party gained support by capitalizing on this sentiment.
