The base game, and faction creation is the main draw of the game. This is really a turn based RTS, and relies on build variety. IMO, you will be funneled into a certain type of build just to be viable but there are enough strong effects for you to exploit in every tome. You want to make busted units with your tomes, and destroy your enemy. If you don't, the AI/Enemy will get their own busted shit and fuck you up. The other victory conditions simply aren't more viable than military. The DLCs got fully paradoxitized, and are predatory and super expensive for what you really get. Cream API it.
Multiplayer is broken, don't even bother. Just go up against super hard AI, and see if your faction can hack it. Story maps are really challenge maps, and not tutorials.
I love the game, simply because of the build variety and role-play.
