AND because someone said the AI still gets a small eco buff even on normal, not sure if that was true or if it still gets that handout in the current patch since that was way back in AoW4 launch
difficulty settings expanded since then to be more modular, and I got really used to enjoying the combat. Forced myself to play mystic potential culture and not rely on auto-resolve

I've been unfocused, because of a comment a friend made a while ago. Basically, he claimed you can put everything into D&D alignement, and I've been struck trying to put the different Battle Realms clans into this chart, because at first glance, it's simple:
- Dragon is Good Lawful,
- Serpent is Evil Lawful,
- Wolf is Good Unlawful,
- Lotus are Cunts.

But it doesn't work, because, in the case of the Dragon: at first glance, they're all honorable and chill as fuck, but when you take a look, the archers and spearmen are humble warriors while the Samurai is proud of his skill, but they are still all fanatics ready to murder the fuck out of you violently just you even present a danger, they won't wait for you to attack first.
So does that really work?

None. The change from 25 was just that they wanted pop numbers to be high so it looked like planets had lots of people.
So next update they'll probably multiply the number by another 100. Then your new colonies will start with 10,000 settlers and your capital will start the game with 500,000 pops.

Yes, mechanicus are less combat-inclined, but them being able to fight so well would raise the question of why they aren't the frontline of the Imperium instead of, well, the marines.

ok
Also, consider the following:
it all depends from dices, so don't rely on freak accidents and lucky streaks to jauge of someone's strength. I once had a squad of termagaunts absolutely analhilating a squad of these dark eldars wyches in a single shooting phase.
Anonymous No.538348786 >>538358281

>because they outnumber them
They get back up after being shot. That's what gives them the "near-unstoppable metal tide" reputation that they had when they were a new faction. That's why the only surefire way to stop them is to deactivate their tombs/monoliths before they ever wake up.

But even in gameplay they're tough to kill, hence why they move so slowly as a balancing measure. Dawn of War Winter Assault's final mission is portrayed as, and plays out like a fucking nightmare because of that. It takes an imperial Titan just to stop a local mob of them... and now they're jobbers?

Hmm. Based on empire score fighting Alex looks like it'll be tougher, but logistically easier since your empire's core is right next to him. After a you capture a city of two from him you should have a relatively "safe" front line as he'll be attacking into lands that have no real effect on your production.

Lizzie'll be a bitch to fight solely because of distance. Wittenberg will force some attention west when you really want to expand into Daegu/Newcastle to bring the war on her turf. Luckily all the hills should help defending their initial push, but that's a lot of distance and chokepoints for you to cross to get into her core.

Either way, blood for the blood god.

It's the same thing for me when I play Rule the Waves 3 (which is coincidentally also a spreadsheet simulator but with quasi-RTS battles as well). I have to turn research speed all the way down because otherwise I'll end up constantly replacing and refitting ships because I got a new fire control or whatever, but even then I still use the separate option for slower heavier than air research because I want to play with big gun ships that tend to get sunk by planes pretty quickly.

Weirdest part is that i didnt use to be like that.
When i played Civ i was perfectly fine with the idea that the earliest combat units wont see much combat before upgrades, that they are merelt something that i meant to be obsolete soon and is purely for guarding early cities or defences against barbarians..
And now when i play Aurora i feel like i miss something when my 1st tier engine, conventional armour, barely can call it a warship corvette havent seen at least 10 battles.
Like i know that many warship types irl also never saw actual combat and got obsolete and replaced by newer shit but after few "missed" tech levels like that i get such intense restartitis that i mostly just restart the entire game...
Perspective of clearing the entire tech tree paralyzes me despite me never actually doing that in my life.
>>538517971
Thats exactly how it works in Aurora.
Anonymous No.538523696
>>538517971
That would be boring. It's much more interesting to get new components and then design ships around them and refit old designs with new stuff. The trick is getting the pacing right. You want new stuff often enough that you don't have to wait ages but at the same time you don't want it often enough that building existing designs feels like a waste cause "I will have the X soon anyways"

>>538516581
Try parallel research, it helps with this problem by "batching" few techs at a time making upgrades more natural and easier to perform.

You play as a sentient coral reef and have to grow tubes n shit and get fish to live in them. You have lots of specialised "buildings" to attract different species of fish. They're both population and resource because they have to eat each other.

They took big risks, fucked with the formula too much and people hated it as soon as they announced it and people never stopped hating it.

That on its own was bad enough, the game releasing extremely stripped of features, polish and mechanics and coming off more as a "le fun competitive pvp game between le friends" than a legitimate 4X game was also bad enough of its own

I think you are confusing risk taking with complacency. They took enormous risks by deviating so massively off the most successful game in the series so far, even daring to copy a flop of a game with "bet we can do that better (we can't)" attitude. They were complacent because though thought they could release a broken game and fix it with DLC but even if the game wasn't heap of trash on a technical level and had polish of civ 6 it would have still been a failure because the risky core features they decided to go with were just bad.

On a more optimistic guess, natural turnover as old creative teams move on/retire and a new team gets the helm. It was nearly 9 years between 6 and 7, and they've obviously taken notice of how Amplitude has made its splash in 4X. They're juggling bold new ambitions, trying to keep franchise legacy/traditions, and responding to/aping other mechanics put forth by their competition.

But also keep in mind that basegame Civ is vastly different from final product Civ. They're going to change mechanics a lot as the years go by; hell, vanilla Civ V had powerful infinite city sprawl that got nerfed so hard that Brave New World Civ V has to deal with "Go Tradition, Go Tall, Five Cities Max (generally) or get fucked by happiness penalties." And that was only within 3 years. By the time 7 is done with the game will be hopefully be in a much better state.

Lastly, to paraphrase Sid Meier himself a lot of Civ players will find and stick with "their" Civ game. Whatever entry has mechanics that jive with them best will be the one they come back to regardless of whatever the newest/flashiest entry is. I'm guessing that small thought leads to Sid allowing a lot more risk to be taken with editing the formula, even if it's beyond the team'a abilities.

I think it's more to do with how tileless maps support more tactical and less strategic gameplay but making it easier to code is certainly a factor (especially making the AI easier to code). You aren't really supposed to focus on precise positioning of your units in 4x rather on production and overwhelming the enemy with a superior tech or proper counter.
I'm sure there are games that don't have tiles (like Aurora) but they are going to be pretty niche for that reason. RTS or total war or I dunno table top wargame simulators probably cover that niche better.

Space elevators (at least the conventional ones) have to have their center of mass above the geostationary (so practically the counterweight station has to be lot higher than that). A typical design has it going up to 3 times higher than geostationary (36 000km) such as 100 000km, for reference the circumference is only 40 000km. That being said only the part that has it's center of mass below the geostationary will actually fall down if the cable breaks, the rest will fly up and escape the gravity well or settle in new orbits. That could be almost all of it if it breaks just below the counterweight station or almost none of it if it breaks near the ground station. It should be noted that for Mars geostationary is lower than the circumference of the planet and same generally holds true for all smaller planets where an elevator is even possible with relatively little magic.
Basically the most likely problem spots either result in no cable hitting the ground or enough to wrap the planet several times (which it would due to the way the cable stays in tension essentially the entire time). Anywhere in between is possible due to things like meteor impacts on the cable or just random breakage as well.
