Patlabor is essential watching too. It's not a mere slice of life.
It's cream when it comes to animation and the "art" of anime. Sorta like Lodoss, CCS (underrated as fuck) or the Arslan ova from that era. Peak cel animation. It's totally worth it for that.

It is great to see the artist's hand directly for a bit, but for a full episode, or a season, it's more immersive to be painted (even if there is no longer an ink & paint department). The presence of the animator is a reason I stick with anime though. Westoid animation went largely to pixar rendering and there's no end to intra-industry dick sucking trying to praise the medium, which is literally pointless to watch. May as well watch and critique AI.
