The real reason why XVI is so shit is the way every single ounce of its potential as an FF game is completely squandered.
Every single FF staple that you want in the gameplay mechanics has been completely ripped out with nothing to replace it.

With a game like XV, even though there are so many blatant flaws and missteps it still realizes its potential as an FF game.
It has the party members, the commands, an overworld, the summons, the spectacle, the villain, a great ending. It has it all.

And when compared to XIII, once again despite all of the obvious flaws, it still realizes its potential as an FF game.
It has the party members, the mechanics, the Commands, Gran Pulse, the summons, the spectacle, the villain, and a great ending.
