I think the worst part about all that early-game shit was that even on my first playthrough, I could sense that none of it was going to matter. Brahne was an obvious one-dimensional temporary villain going nowhere fast. Kuja's motivations were completely obscure, and remain almost entirely obscure until Garland finally shows up late in the game. Zidane's motivations to score with Garnet are fine but otherwise he isn't really developed at all. He's just the guy there helping everyone else with their problems.

I think it's interesting to contrast Zorn and Thorn with The Turks from FF7. Turks have multiple distinct characters with real personalities and relationships to different characters while Zorn and Thorn are just goofy and echo each other's words. It's not that there's anything exactly wrong with Z&T, it's just that they are very shallow characters despite being significant to the plot.
