American style is more like the French. Both have some similarities as both had revolutions around the same time stemming from Enlightenment ideas. That basically means it's for everyone. The French for example would try to assimilate the people in the colonies, teach them French manners, encourage adopting French tastes, and embracing republican ideals. The British didn't do this so much. There was usually some degree of distance between The Brits and whoever they ruled. This is why British-style "multiculturalism" is how it is, they think they're being tolerant by keeping everybody separated in their own culture/ethnic groups but that's how they did colonialism.
The U.S. has problems with immigration but this has always been paradoxical because a lot of Americans really want these people to become Americans. The French also want to make their Muslims into French people.
