the way people talk about Azrael/Jean-Paul Valley makes it seem like most people are familiar with second-hand summaries of Knightfall than actually reading the character
Hes nothing like Red Hood at all. He has no actual desire for vengeance or , it's all in his programming that he's conflicted over.
The real angle to take JPV is that he's basically a pretty boy with a dark past he's not entirely aware of and a sort of split personality, while also lacking any self-assurance or direction. In a lot of ways he feels more like a Japanese character to me, but he never quite gets the self-actualization that makes that sort of storytelling tolerable where he rises to some greater purpose and takes control of his lack of direction
