Kids are always sympathetic. They were an easy slam dunk that Wells dropped the ball on. Just like everything else. Then they disappeared and it meant nothing. They didn't get to mean anything, when they should have. There was narrative potential behind the kids.
Everything about Wells' run was like that. What did all of that shit mean with Paul and his dad? Nothing. Paul didn't get an arc, which is far worse than if he did and was depicted as heroic. Now there's just this guy floating around that people don't like, and there's no narratively satisfying way to get rid of him. Shit happens, and it means nothing.
It's not just that dumb shit happened in the run, it's that it didn't even mean anything. Shit happens because it happens. There wasn't an arc. It didn't even need to be deep, just basic RESPONSIBILITY shit, "It doesn't matter that they weren't real, the parts of me that I gave them were." It just showed MJ and Paul as sad and distant.
Frankly, it wouldn't surprise me if it was just more of Wells being a whiny faggot about his wife leaving him. Literally every story he writes now has the main character getting dumped by their love jnterest for absurd reasons. It wouldn't surprise me if the kids were a bitch-tier metaphor for his dreams to shit out crotch-dumplings of his own disappearing.
