This is all you need right here; Wizardry V on the SNES. They took what used to be wire frame graphics and gave it a 16-bit coat of paint and it looks amazing. Also, it was the first in the series to break the convention that all dungeon levels had to be perfect 10x10 grids, which feels amazing.
And the big one - there’s NPCs. It’s the same hard as fuck style as Wiz 1 - 3 (none of that gay nu-Wizardry that started in 6), but now there’s NPCs to interact with in the labyrinth that you can talk with, buy and sell from, or just be glad to see instead of more monsters.
The game feels like an actual evil dungeon that’s trying to kill you, and every victory is well earned. This is forever what Wizardry will be for me. I wish there were more like it.
