Aztec history nerd here, I don't quite get it either

I get the specific references to Aztec culture they're going for, he has a pectoral mirror like what you see with Anahuatl and his knife (named Aztec) summons spirits like how mirrors were said to be underworld gateways and emit omens, and Tezcatlipoca is tied to both of those things, though he's associated with Jaguars, not Wolves

But I don't get why they landed on a Aztec (or more generically, Indigenous American, I think there's some US/Canadian Indigenous theming in there too) theme for their Mercury/Hermes represantive.

Tlalocmon in any case is a huge step up in terms of research and theming, I legit think he might be the best Digimon design Bandai has done in terms of leveraging historical and mythological influences. Not that he looks anything like Tlaloc, but there's a lot of symbolism present that's used in inventive ways and taken into other visual directions, which can actually be harder to do then a straight up "Accurate" design

Speak of the devil, I guess

I don't see any clear Mesoamerican origin for this design. Had you asked me to design one for the move, I would have based the spirits on the Cihuateteoh (minor goddesses born from women who died in childbirth), maybe the Tzitzimime (destructive star goddesses who could end the world during eclipses or other times, also protectors of women in childbirth) or the Yohualtepoztli (a ghostlike avatar of Tezcatlipoca)

The pectoral there does look vaguely Puuc Maya ish to me, but that's about it.
