Here's the thing: it's clunky, but it's designed to be clunky, encounters facilitate this, the whole thing is pretty much a game focused around what it is because that's good design. When you get good at KH1, you're wiping out small crowds of Heartless in seconds because you're a well-oiled machine of key-shaped destruction, and the stiff jump, awkward camera and inconsistent lock-on won't do a damn thing to hold you back compared to even some modern games with these same problems that never seem to be designed with the problems in mind. It's like complaining that Ocarina of Time sucks and didn't age well because of recentering the camera all the time, when that's not actually a problem in OoT itself thanks to how the game was made with this consideration.
KH1 really is just the final wellspring of good Mana games despite not sharing any developers, anyway. Unless co-op was the only reason you ever liked the Mana series.
