There's your problem. The whole point of the Musashi+Yamato comp is the special touch attack.

The Yamato touch attack is the solution to this problem. Your touch attack is supposed to either land a big touch hit on the boss at the start, or clear out both of the Re's so the whole day battle will be chipping the boss down. To help accomplish this, you also use boss shelling support to try to sink the destroyers (which only needs one sparkling destroyer as flagship, so it's not too much effort), increasing your chances of touch hitting the big ships.

Don't worry, back in the old days touch attacks weren't in the game, so at least you got to get the experience of good old fashioned hazing out of this.
