Americans seem completely disconnected from symbolic language, probably as a result of their total judeaization.
The so-called idol, be it a statue, a tree or whatever is not typically understood as the direct object of worship, just as a man speaking on the phone isn't speaking TO the phone, or a man speaking to his wife's headstone isn't speaking to the literal rock or dirt. There is someone on the other end that is the recipient.
The ancient tree is where the tribe meets, so therefore it is also where the ancestors look to from the afterlife and where the land spirits we live among come to meet us and where the patron god or ancestral hero "dwells", just as the mortals do.
Additionally, the tree is almost always the biggest most impressive tree in the area, meaning that it is already special, worthy of admiration for its size and might. The spirit of the tree is greater than the spirit of the other trees in the area. That spirit can be venerated as well (see dryads etc).
The traditions continue to this day with bringing in vegetation into the home, having a family tree in the garden, planting a tree when someone is born, etc.
