Maybe I'm used too more generous gacha but doesn't that seem... hysterically stingy? You just have to play the game without ever touching the gacha system for damn-near a quarter of a year to assure yourself one single uma?

Honestly, at this point, it's just taking up inventory space. Even if you have NOTHING you want to power up, you should just use em for the 100-to-1 XL ratio just to clear up bag space.
Set a number you feel comfortable (368, or 370 if you like even numbers, is probably the highest benchmark worth having, allowing you to power up a Research Mythical and give it a 2nd move immediately), and spend the rest.
Personally, I spend mine on stupid shit, like my HP Rock Regigigas, or my Mega Latios. Not useful, but just kinda checkboxing my legendaries down the list of usefulness.
