Trannies.
>1998-1999 (Japanese volumes)
Yellow arc: Yellow is a manga exclusive OC. Yellow looks and dresses androgynously and is assumed to be a boy. Later in chapter 78 it's revealed Yellow's a girl.
>2003 (Japanese volumes)
GSC arc, chapter 180: Gold pats a girl's ass because he's an anime pervert, then rightfully gets the shit beaten out of him.
>2003 (Japanese volumes)
RS arc: Ruby and Sapphire are new characters explicitly created to subvert some gender roles/expectations. Emphasis on "some". They're both straight and neither are trannies.
>2013 (the tipping point)
In the west, tranny activists succeed in making trannyism no longer be officially defined as a mental illness (see the DSM-5). They proceed to make trannyism look cool and trendy to young people through subversive mass media campaigns, though they already had a head start on this years earlier.
>early 2010s in general (English volumes)
The manga's accessibility in North America was in years long limbo until around this time. Now VIZ Media starts publishing official English translations of the manga arcs after RGB/Y, so for many westerners this was their first opportunity to legally read the GSC arc onwards.
But among the newly expanded western readerbase, some very loud kids decided that all the events mentioned above are now problematique and controversial. Having been brainwashed by recent tranny propaganda, they now want Yellow to be an official tranny/nonbinary character, for Gold to get extra cancelled (or something) and for Ruby/Sapphire to be official trannies and homosexuals at the same time. The fact their headcanons aren't real offends them greatly. These "people" have other shitty ideas too but those are the major ones.
Even if they're a vocal minority, their screeching was bad enough to shit up the entire existing online anglophone manga fanbase after the 2010s and ruin it forever.
