It's a novel way of storytelling for its genre reminiscent of the kind of archaeology people do in roguelikes to share online instead of sitting through cutscenes and dialogue trees.
It lets you skip out on a lot of storylines and content but a lot of it is also great so it makes you want to go out and explore the world between checkpoints.
A signature FromSoft touch is the extensive world building which allows you to trace every little thing in the game from smouldering butterflies to a spell seemingly out of place.
Oh and it also has multiplayer albeit a bit weird but mods came to the rescue.
But the most important innovation of all in Open World was getting rid of the fucking UI when you're travelling allowing you to actually see the world and how it's supposed to be presented. All UX/UI-designers must realize that the ultimate goal is to design away themselves, otherwise you end up with Ubisoft who thankfully seem to be imploding atm.
