television/film = low entry barrier "hobby", everyone does it, and as a result a lot of refuse enters the discourse.

literature/books = high leverage, high focus activity that very, very few people do. requires time, requires patience, exercises and enriches the mind with information more than nearly any other activity that can be possibly done. It also has the commonality of words with this kind of written discussion, so there's much less information being lost discussing texts on a text imageboard then discussing films through text. In the end, better discussion is a foregone conclusion when it comes to literature.
