It was probably possible to get your ass kicked for being gay when I was in high school, but what I think was more likely is that you'd just get shunned by everyone. We didn't have the Nazis, either.

I went to Pride in the evening, long enough to wander around the vendor tents, and watch the free concert. I remember two guys in pup hoods and harnesses that I thought looked good, but I didn't talk to them. I have a long-term boyfriend, so it didn't feel right. (He wasn't there - I think he had to work that night.)

I went to the sports, but I also hung out with the trench-coat types in high school. (Before Columbine, so trench coats weren't seen as a big deal.) I was academically good, but socially not so much, so I kind of fit in with the misfits, if that makes sense.
