Because the true purpose of the episode isn’t about that friendship. The purpose is to highlight what Gumball is, even when he’s not there.
That despite the nature of Julius, he can’t taint what Darwin is.
Only Gumball can do that. And if Gumball was there then Darwin would have gotten his ass kicked.
The world revolves around Gumball and even Darwin might be consider no better off than the rest of the students.

>Gumball continuity has been generally horribly utilized and the show would have been better off if it never made some of the attempts it made.
>episodes like the Transformation and Amadain should have been episodes in season 4 but we waited like four years since the Shell for one episode then almost ten for the other. I don’t care what you personally think of the episodes themselves, it’s just criminal that it took as long as it did.
>Other shows had generally five years of existence and then nothing ever again. Gumball is lucky for the opportunity it has because it basically got another chance despite half of its 14 year life being shelved while doing nothing significant with its world in the first half
>characters dynamics are poor regardless if they are held together for lore reasons or not. Banana Joe being the only other character that has major beef with Rob is insane when I think about it. Like Penny has cheerleading friends but even we don’t know how they all actually interact with each other. And it’s implicitly implied that Gumball and his school mates are already friends despite their issues so Penny’s circle doesn’t mean much.
