There’s been a nagging voice in my mind since I rewatched this show that really makes me think that Teri was lined up as Darwin’s girlfriend at some point and that Carrie was going to be left alone.

The thing about Gumball is, it's basically two writing styles fighting over the same show.

Some episodes it's an earnest and sentimental sitcom about a loving family and friendly community that you're meant to take at face value.

Sometimes it's a snarky and cynical farce ala Family Guy about a gaggle of disillusioned assholes that barely tolerate each other.

I think it's two shows that completely differ and as a result has two very different fanbases.

Carrie becoming Darwin's gf wouldn't have been so bad if Darwin were to be treated like a proper co-main character that could carry an episode on his own, rather than a sounding board to Gumball. I remember how, in "The Matchmaker", reunion of Carrie and Darwin was just for the last ten seconds or so, because near-entirety of the episode had been dedicated to Gumball and his matchmaking/matchbreaking schemes. I also remember how Darwin - in an extremely rare proper Darwin episode - befriended Julius... only for this friendship to disappear without a trace while Gumball's frienship with Hot Dog Guy became a multi-episode arc. Show being so Gumball-centric means that the instant Carrie became a part of Darwin's sphere, she had been reduced to a tertiary role as her life no longer revolves around the blue cat.

Gumball is a terrible character and is solely the one thing that is holding back the show, Darwin is a objectively better character to be begin with due to Darwin being a likable character and actually relatable Darwin isn't naive dumb nice he's very much like old spongebob, where you can see Darwin has a limit or being patient with other characters like with his dum shitty brother, but ofc he will show kindness and patience at first. And also the fact Darwin has a unique backstory and amazing chemistry that was setup in season 2 and is consistently good unlike Penball which became shell of its former self. The letter ep was fine for both characters I know you all hate it because it showed there was no chemistry at all for Gumball and Carrie which makes sense! They don't see each other as friends more like forced aquatintes since they want to help Darwin's needs this is the same thing happend with spongebob with patrick and Sandy they really like spongbob, but they don't like each other much.
Also the julius episode with Darwin being the main character was really good, it showed how Darwin can actually control the show by his own without Gumball and the fact Julius and Darwin never had negative interactions after this episode.
The fact we are getting a two part special for Carwin and episodes about Darwin meeting his actual biological parents means Darwin has alot going for him in the future. Meanwhile with Gumball its just another humiliation ritual all over again.
