I personally was never attached too heavily with the Watterson’s when I started watching this show.
Immediately I realized the boys were the sacrifice needed to get to rest of the school and at the time I found they were more than tolerable enough for me to not entirely mind that. They were “normal” and everyone else was not, so I understood the dynamics on why it had to be like this and accepted it. Not that I couldn’t enjoy the Watterson boys or family at the time of season 2 but they were always second fiddle. A means to an end. Filler for the characters I really wanted.
These days I appreciate the season 2 incarnation of the family genuinely, but that probably has a lot to do with the direction of the latter seasons being too sour to my liking. Couldn’t appreciate what I had until it was gone essentially and now all I can do is cherish when it was there.
I had a lot of hope back then that this show would blossom into something very dynamic, but I was too blind of what was in front of me to see that what I really wanted was never going to be the case. Some reason I allowed myself to be strung along for too long and I never achieved the clarity that maybe I don’t like this show anymore until mid season 4 rolled in. Whatever I actually liked was sparse and it was just not worth it to trudge along with its release pace. I just waited for episodes to collect up even though I felt the show had nothing worth talking about on /co/ because sunk cost kept me hooked just enough where I couldn’t let go entirely, and somehow during that time the board went from liking the show to hating it when I came around again.
And I felt vindicated lmao. Not all my opinions lined up with /co/, and they certainly shifted even more since my rewatch, but yeah this show mostly fucking sucks and I regret every second of it.
