I recently had to block two or so nazis in a recent match because they thought it'd be funny to "fun"post in chat with dead far-right memes from 2020. I'm glad that there's a block function so I could continue to play in peace but I need to talk about this

I don't know what's about this community that attracts edgy teens who like to LARP as nazis, but that kind of behaviour shouldn't be normalized. Whether it's spamming racist or homophobic slurs, this is the only game where I've seen it happen without consequence while being encouraged and defended by the community.

In an ideal world, I wouldn't have to explain why that is a bad thing, but I will, briefly: this is a on-line, casual, team-based First-Person-Shooter that is played by people of all ages and backgrounds which we play in order to fill a hole that the world leaves inside of us after a stressful day, before we can move on to the next day. Everyone should feel comfortable (at home) when playing it, else the game isn't doing what it's supposed to do: if it gets anybody uncomfortable because of an unwelcoming community, then that hole isn't getting filled up.

The kind of hostile behaviour which I mentioned above created an environment that was neither safe for minorities or children (I'm thinking of people aged 10 to 18). Minorities, for obvious reasons. For children (whether they're minorities or not), because it normalizes antisocial behaviour and can feed into their own insecurities rather than help them escape from those things, for why else do children play games, if not to escape by having fun in a safe environment?

One might object: but you're not a minority nor a child, therefore you shouldn't be upset at those nazis. Just mind your own bussiness. My response is this: I have empathy. I'm not a saint, I wouldn't sacrifice everything I have to for the wellbeing of another personl, but I care about the welfare of people. If I see someone upset or someone being hostile towards another person, I feel upset because that person who is being hurt could have been me. Moreover, I have moral convictions. Even if I weren't hurt directly, I'd still disapprove of hostile behaviour and reason can turn into emotion (e.g. I rationally support nuclear power; therefore I experience negative emotions in knowning that nuclear power is underfunded around the world). So, when I witness unwelcoming behaviour such as that mentioned in the second paragraph, I experience negative emotions because that is not how we should treat each other.

Another possible objection: TF2 is not a children's game. However, It is common sense that TF2 is played by many teenagers. The reasons for this are that it is a F2P game, relatively light on spec requirements and it has a cartoon design with cartoon violence. That doesn't make it a "children's game" but makes it accessible to them.

You may then object that this in no way obligates Valve to make it safe for children. Nonetheless, Valve allows children to play their game. An environment that takes childen in should make them save even if they sell things that they can not use, e.g. a bar that sells alcoholic beverage shouldn't sell them to children. Indeed, the parents are responsible, but so are the owners of the establishment. And, if neither the parents nor the establishment are performing their duties, we still have to act morally. You wouldn't buy a drink for a child simply because their parents and the establishment are negligent. Therefore, it falls on the parents, the establishment (Valve) and, finally, on us, to make TF2 a safe environment for children.

Finally, you may object that you should just do what I said that I did in the first paragraph: just block. First off, this is merely a half measure. You can turn the other cheek but that won't stop violence. Verbal violence isn't the same as physical violence, but it still amounts to an unecessary discomfort that disturbs us when we're trying to achieve exactly the opposite. I shouldn't have to stop what I'm doing to block someone when I should be distracting through with gaming. It would be better, indeed, in everyone's best interest if we fostered a community where everyone felt welcome. Would rather walk down a street that feels safe, or a street where you know you have to be your on your guard? Blocking should always remain an option, much like we should always have a right to defend ourselves, but so should we (and desire to) be in a place where we never have to worry about defending ourselves. You're always more comfortable when you know you won't have to worry; you'll be more comfortable playing TF2 knowing you won't have to worry about bigotry.

In short, my argument is this:
-Gaming should make everyone less stressed so we can move on with our lives
-A condition for this is that everyone should feel welcome
-Racism and bigotry doesn't make everyone welcome
--It harms minorities, children and anyone with a sense of empathy or morality
-Blocking only marginally helps the issue
-Good behaviour (non-bigotry) makes people feel welcome
-Therefore, we should be always on good behaviour.

The key really is in the notion of 'community'. It is what we want it to be. Those who do not fit in, either do not belong or learn to belong. Those who refuse to belong are ostracized. That might be done via policing (e.g moderators or popular vote like vote kicking) and/or social pressure. We might come to agree that bigotry should not be tolerated and therefore police or pressure other members of our community to behave according to that agreement. We should only reach that through conversation, so we converse...
