I generally agree, but

Can be important for original research. Experimentation is part of the magical research progress (see Upunth's description and pic related), and good experimentation requires careful observation and recording of results, which are attentiveness things.

Doesn't help with the "guess at an answer from the few scattered fragments of a more complex picture that you have access to" parts of magical research, though, which seem to be the most important.
