This has actually happened before
The works of Plato and Aristotle are the groundwork of all rational thinking more or less, and they wrote them down in very clear and easy to understand books, it's difficult to misinterpret what they meant.
However, for over a thousand years, medieval theologians completely misinterpreted their works to be all about theology and not reason.
As a result, the dark ages.
The same is happening for science today. Every practice, every term and concept is being redefined to mean meaningless things. Already, "scientists" have become essentially priests, they have no interest in the scientific method, they just operate on their intuition which they are sure is infallible, and they call that the scientific method.
Within a few generations, any attempts at actual science will be nothing but a faint memory. Scientists will be a full priestly class. Newton's laws of thermodynamics will become liturgical prayers, they won't actually know what any of the words mean but will be certain that they ward off disease or something.
Mathematical formulas will be seen as the new defacto satanic curses, and anyone caught writing them will be stoned.
This will continue indefinitely, perhaps another thousand years, until society finds its new Francis Bacon
