Countries historically have had victories defined by historians even if they lost lot of men in the process. Vietnam for example, North Vietnam lost a shitload of men but ended up winning the war in the long run and taking back the South.
Another example is a war Russia actually did infact lose "Russo-Afghan War" in which Russians actually won most battles, killed more people than they ended up getting killed on their own side, but they still lost the war because they didn't achieve what they set out to do.

Regardless of those examples I don't think the Ukraine been honest about casualities they probably lost more people than Russia.
