I was thinking about this from the opposite direction
It seems in every animated movie there has to be a "this is the sad scene, with all the pathos, don't you feel bad for him?" part, something that practically no other genre "requires". Very strict and anal commitment to the "hero's journey" crap.
It's safe to say most animated movies are comedies so I'll contrast it with that; most comedies I've seen recently have been Golden Age when they had a very different attitude towards structure so to be fair I'll compare to a more contemporary picture like "Dirty Work". There's not really a "sad scene" in that movie, I guess there's the scene where Mitch fucked up, his girlfriend dumped him and he got played, but it also has the villain sticking his thumb up a dog's ass. Its' main focus is comedy and entertainment, not making you "feel" something.
Animated shit in general has this inferiority complex where it can't just be "this is funny and entertaining", there's gotta be lessons and shit like that
