Nope, its through and through a copy of Korean BBQ. There is a specific method and style, this isn't just 'grilling meat over fire' which everyone has done at one point or another. Skewered meat has been done for ages before Japan like in Mongolia as example and there are earlier civilizations that have done it prior.
But beyond all that, look at the etymology of the word Yakiniku. It dates back from the Meiji Restoration era after eating meat was made legal again.
BEFORE the newer term Yakiniku even existed, you guys called it Chōsen ryōri, aka Korean Cuisine.
