It is true. The "Korean BBQ" style is supposed to be made with Korean Hanwoo beef. But this beef is not easy to procure in Korea. In most cases, they give the people Wagyu beef imported from Japan and tell them "this is Korean BBQ".

Even with the ban there was a meat-eating culture that continued in places like Momojiya, and this took on a wide variety of forms including boar, deer, cow and horse.
The Hikone Domain was the only place in Japan to produce miso-marinated beef, known as heihongan. This marked the beginning of Omi beef becoming a local specialty . During the period when the port was opened, Omi beef was shipped on foot along the Tokaido, and later by steamship to Tokyo and Yokohama.
The custom of "yakiniku" (grilled meat) already existed before the Meiji era. For example, in Yokohama , at the end of the Edo period when the port was opened , there was a dish in which skewered grilled beef was sold and offered to customers. The word yakiniku itself (grilled meat) is also older than the Korean BBQ concept.
So you are wrong, the word yakiniku and the practice of eating grilled meats is very old in Japan. I do not deny there was also Korean that influenced the practice.
I am also not surprised you had your internet brigade image all prepared. Like I have said this is to be expected when one mentions the country of Korea.
