I also like that daring aspect to Bae.
Being a fan of tragic romances, I was actually disappointed that Bay was not more dark. I think it should have leaned into the genre more and had Chloe/Max decide to end their lives together. Both to save the bay and so that they are not split up yet again by fate. Having one die and one just linger on alone really defies genre conventions in the worst ways.
In a tragic romance about two lovers who are constantly split up, any conclusion to that story has to bring them together. Either by them sacrificing their old lives in order to start new ones together (ala Bae) or by them choosing to be together in death. Bay just fails at this and so in my opinion is a failed ending to the narrative.
That is to say nothing of Bay as we have it making the horrible decision to basically undo 99% of the game. That is it's own failing in and of itself.

>Bay is the end of its Max's story, but Bae is the beginning
Another point in Bae's favor honestly. Bae just feels so much more open ended. You can imagine the story of Chloe and Max going in countless directions from them driving out of the Bay together.
But with the Bay ending, there really is no real narrative potential. Chloe and Max were written as foils for each other, so it is hard to picture anything beyond a Bay ending. Nothing that could be done without Max basically being a whole new character anyway.
Also, when you consider some of the shots in Bay and just some of the more upsetting implications of a Bay timeline, the only real story that you could picture for Max beyond what we see in that ending is her killing herself.

At this point I'm just on the side of not bumping this shit so that we can try again.
