Well, as for that, in the book Sam uses the soil from Lorien to make the Shire even more Edenic and peaceful than ever before, and Aragorn decrees on pain of DEATH that no human can enter it. So I think Hobbits ended up even better than they were initially. Of course Tolkien also said they were eventually hunted down by cruel humans and regressed into a state of pygmies completely forgetful of their past.
