Freeze doesn't like in-helmet comms and initially refused to use them. Even now he still wants to do everything the old way, relying on assistants to do all the "electronic stuff". He's also notoriously lazy so it wouldn't be a surprise at all if he both insists on using old style signaling and is too lazy to change the signals once in a while.

Bad QB and bad coaching staff. A good coaching staff would recognize a QB's shortcomings and adjust the play calling to accommodate it. Shitty coaches, which is what Auburn has, insist that the game plan they drew up is the one true word of the football gods. They'll hammer at it with the wrong talent forever.
The dangerous thing about coaches like that is once in a while they stumble into having the talent they need for their schemes (they can't evaluate or develop talent so it's mostly by accident), and get good results. Outsiders who don't look at the coaches in depth get tricked into thinking they're geniuses. That's when someone with deeper pockets comes along, hires them away, and end up wondering why things are going so shitty with the new staff.
