In 2011, violent rioting ensued in the city of Peshawar, capital of Pakistans Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province after a prominent local cleric found what looked to be a star of david in the pattern on bathroom tiles in a local McDonalds restroom. The workers of the restaurant who were accused of being Israeli-American agents were beaten and set on fire. Rioting eventually expanded to targeting anyone suspected as connected to American establishments.
133 establishments which were seen as American friendly were destroyed or damaged including 30 McDonalds restaurants, 8 Ford dealerships, 7 Burger Kings, 3 Starbucks, 6 Apple stores, a Pepsi factory, the local McDondalds regional corporate office, a girls school and two American owned factories which manufactured antibiotics and medicine for the local refugee population.
The rioting resulted in an 2,476 known deaths. 98% of those killed had no ties to American businesses whatsoever. The unrest lasted 9 days and resulted in the ouster of the provincial government and the region being placed under martial law. Rioting finally ended after the military sent in 10,000 troops equipped with tanks and armored vehicles.
The following day, US forces infiltrated a local compound and killed Osama Bin Laden who had been in hiding in Pakistan. This strike was seen by many in Pakistan as a retaliation by America for the destruction of local McDonalds restaurants. In Pakistan it is known as the Haambargar Janga (ہیمبرگر جنگ) or the Hamburger war.
